How to Plan Your Time in Sonoma County
Wineries
There are 19 AVA’s (American Viticultural Areas) or regions, in Sonoma County. With over 420 wineries, in approximately 1700 square miles, the quickest way to figure out which wineries to visit is to know what kind of wines you want to discover; is it white, red, full body, dry, or a light pinot?
This will tell you which region you’ll want to venture into and very quickly you’ll be able to find recommendations from the experts. You can also research by reading reviews, magazines, and websites but for the most efficient way, ask your driver, accommodations host (like myself), or any of the locals like we did on our first visit and which we still do.
The most popular regions for wine tastings when you’re in Sonoma County are the Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Russian River, Chalk Hill, Sonoma Coast, and Carneros. Generally speaking, these are the varietals found in these areas.
Alexander Valley - Cabernet Sauvignon
Dry Creek Valley - Zinfandels, Merlots
Russian River - Pinot Noir
Sonoma Coast - Whites
Carneros - Sparkling Wines
Fine Dining
If you’re looking to try dishes that are perfectly choreographed in Sonoma County terroir, there are a handful of restaurants that are increasingly growing. Depending on where you finish your wine tasting, hike, or a long drive, there are dining rooms with white table cloths to top off your Northern California experience. Here are a few that I would start with:
Healdsburg - Valette, The Matheson, Single Thread (3 Michelin stars), Chalkboard, Barndiva, Dry Creek Kitchen
Dry Creek - The Madrona Inn
The Coast - Rivers End (in Jenner)
Russian River - Farmhouse Inn
